Preserving what matters

In the face of climate change and growing resource constraints, Corbion has developed a new approach to sustainable active nutrition. Our algae fermentation technology not only supports our sustainability goals but also helps our customers achieve theirs. 

To make AlgaViaTM Algae Oils, microalgae are grown in closed fermentation tanks where they transform renewable, sustainable, plant-based sugars into algae containing rich oil in a matter of days. 

Our facility is strategically located among sugar cane fields in Brazil and next door to a sugar cane mill. Compared to other sugar sources such as corn and wheat, the sugar used to produce AlgaViaTM Algae Oils it's one of the world's most productive sugar sources, resulting in practical innovation that is sustainable, affordable, and at scale. Moreover, the sugar cane waste is used as a renewable source of energy that fully powers the sugar mill and our algae facility.

Sustainability

Our production facility was designed to embody sustainability principles in creating microalgae-based products with low carbon, water, and land use impacts. To measure the environmental impacts of our production, we have completed a full Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for the AlgaPrime™ DHA portfolio which demonstrated that Omega-3s from AlgaPrime™ DHA have a lower carbon footprint compared to traditional Omega-3s sources of fish oil.  Our Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is ISO 14040/44-compliant and was peer-reviewed and accepted for scientific publication in Algal Research on September 15, 2021. 

The EAS project, or "Envejecimiento Activo y Saludable", is an initiative that aims to address the aging population in Chile by developing and implementing public policies and practical strategies for active and healthy aging. By collaborating with the University of North Karelia, known for its expertise in this field, and local Chilean municipalities, the project aims to integrate Finnish and Chilean experiences to promote active aging from childhood. This includes training local leaders to sustain and expand these innovations, ultimately improving the quality of life for the elderly population across Chile. Corbion is one of the seven proud collaborators of the EAS project.
