In-can preservatives:

Overcoming new regulatory challenges while meeting evolving consumer demands

Assessing the need for innovation

In-can preservatives – namely biocides – are commonly used across a range of industries to protect products from spoilage. Isothiazolinones – an important biocide family - are regularly used in in-can applications.

Despite isothiazolinones being highly effective, they have long been linked to allergic contact dermatitis. In addition, there has recently been a renewed interest in improving household formulations, so they are more eco-friendly. This is reflective of rising consumer awareness of global environmental issues. These factors, in combination with the introduction of regulatory restrictions on biocide use, are putting growing pressure on manufacturers across the homecare market to comply through innovation.
